DESIGN AS A SYSTEM OF THINKING
Translating a radical design philosophy into the present.
Hellen Westerhof — Designer, Lecturer,
Master Student of Luigi Colani.
For over 15 years, I worked closely with Luigi Colani not only as a designer, but as his last master student. What I experienced was not a style, but a way of thinking. A system.
Colani didn’t design objects. He questioned the assumptions behind them. Today, my work focuses on translating this mindset into lectures, conversations, and new contexts.

Working with Luigi Colani was not a conventional apprenticeship. It was a continuous, close exchange focused on questioning and testing the underlying conditions of design. The emphasis was never on objects, but on the systems and assumptions that generate them. This way of thinking continues to shape my work today and did not remain internal. It gradually moved into public contexts through films, conversations, and institutional settings. A first broader articulation of this work appears in the ARTE documentary on Luigi Colani.
PUBLIC DISCOURSE
ARTE – DOCUMENTARY
Appearance as Luigi Colani’s last master student in the ARTE documentary. The contribution focuses on design as a systemic practice moving beyond objects towards the underlying conditions that shape them. The film situates this perspective within a broader international context, alongside collaborators and contemporaries reflecting on Colani’s legacy.
SWR1 / ARD – LIVE CONVERSATION
Invited by SWR1 for a two-hour live conversation on design philosophy and my work. The discussion extends beyond biography focusing on how design shapes perception and systems including perspectives developed through my long-term work with Luigi Colani.
INSTITUTIONAL DISCOURSE
LECTURES & EXHIBITIONS
Lectures at institutions such as Marta Herford, Galerie Stihl, and the Colani Design Institute explore design as a systemic discipline. Topics include biodesign as methodology, form as a consequence of systems, and design beyond industrial constraints. Talks regularly reach full capacity audiences. My work focuses on communicating and evolving this way of thinking across disciplines and contexts.
Lectures and presentations across
institutional contexts, including Marta
Herford (Germany), Galerie Stihl (Germany),
and the Colani Design Institute (China).
MARTA HERFORD – INTERVIEW SERIES
Interview contribution as part of the exhibition Luigi Colani – Shapes of the Future at Marta Herford. The conversation reflects on direct collaboration, working processes, and the development of Colani’s thinking from within the studio context. It situates these experiences within a broader discussion on design methodology and long-term relevance.
This work continues to evolve through new formats, contexts, and collaborations. Its relevance lies not in preserving a legacy, but in actively translating it into the present.
