EXPERT LECTURE
LUIGI COLANI -
THESES FOR GOOD DESIGN
HELLEN WESTERHOF

Colani master student, multiple award-winning product designer

Luigi Colani saw nature as a profound research unit whose development provided him with an almost endless pool of ideas. He knew how to interpret what he saw for himself in order to develop his own approaches, which were to provide formal and functional answers to the main concerns of society and science: the challenges facing people in the life of tomorrow.

Luigi Colani's guiding principle was to search for those limits, but not to find them for himself and to always improve. His design philosophy became a strategic system and determined his creative energy for the rest of his life.

His design aesthetics were correspondingly consistent, characterised by the impact of signaling colours and biomorphic forms. His works are sculptural icons that, in their appealing complexity, create an emotional bond with the viewer.

As his last master student, who knew Luigi Colani for 15 years, Hellen Westerhof provides insights into Luigi Colani's design theory in her lecture at the Stihl Gallery in Waiblingen.
