Hellen Westerhof is a product designer living in Frankfurt worked for brands such as Moncler, BMW, Philips, and interior clients among others. Her signature style can be described as bold and at the same time reduced with the occasional experimental flourish. Works have been awarded and internationally featured in books, magazines and exhibitions.
Born with Dutch and Austrian citizen in Frankfurt, Hellen Westerhof (*1983) joined product design studies at the Academy of Art and Design (HfG) Offenbach in 2003. In 2004, Hellen met Luigi Colani during the first year of her studies. He offered her a job at his design studio in Karlsruhe. After finding her mentor, a year later, Hellen moved on to Hamburg for her first job with BMW. Nevertheless, Colani and Hellen worked on various joint projects in Germany and China over a period of several years. 2010, back at Academy in Offenbach she graduated with a diploma in product design. During her subsequent postgraduate studies, she received a one semester lectureship and cooperated in projects with Siemens and BBDO. At the end of her academic career, she entered the brand strategy at BBDO in 2011. Since 2012, Hellen creates products and concepts for international brands under her label Hellen Westerhof. Beginning with drafts of Amenity Kits for First and Business Class for LSG Sky Chefs in Frankfurt and a one year consultancy as a design strategist on creating a brand portal for Festo in Stuttgart. Hellen joined a product innovation agency in Berlin 2014 and worked on designs for Philips for about a year. In 2015 she launched her own couch and side table collection which got awarded and featured in international press and exhibitions. After a few years in consumer goods she focused on automotive projects again and worked on a Volkswagen product mailing commercial together with Ogilvy & Mather in Frankfurt. She further created designs for a launched car rim collection for a berlin based tuning company. By a meeting with Carlsson in Saarlouis, Hellen got to make the Mercedes Benz G-Class color and material brand concept for a Moncler Special Edition. Today Hellen works on a new interior and accessory product collection that will be launched in 2020 and as a lead designer for Frankfurt based Master Furriers company Hofmann & Son's contemporary brand Chalet Affair. This includes general design consulting and furniture, luxury Packaging and space design for fairs in Paris, London, Munich, Shanghai. Besides the design work Hellen lectures permanently and has about 80 students at several universities. Since Dec 2016 at University of Applied Sciences Saarbrücken in Visionary Biodesign. With a team of 8 students she works on bionic concepts. In 2017 her 3d printed project "Eco Coral" got sponsored by Villeroy&Boch, Festo and BEN and shown at the BDC Summit at Museum of Modern Art New York City and School of Visual Arts NYC. Her team will join BDC 2020 again. Since Oct 2019 Hellen lectures also at South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences in Strategic Product Design & Design Theory with 74 students. In the past as a lecturer in Innovation Management & Product Design at EC Europacampus Karlsruhe and Design Academy Hanau in 2018.
