Hellen Westerhof is a product designer living in Frankfurt worked for brands such as Moncler, BMW, Philips, and interior clients among others. Her work has won awards and has been featured in international magazines and exhibitions. Hellen was born in October 1983 near Frankfurt. The mother an antiques trader from Holland and the father an international manager from Austria, made her being surrounded by art objects and different cultures. Primarily the extensive journeys to the African continent at a younger age, sharpened her flair, observing forms and materials of alienated designs. In retrospect, she considers her visual imprint as a fusion of European art history and African pragmatism. In 2004, Hellen met Luigi Colani during the first year of her study. He looked through her portfolio and offered her a job at his design studio in Karlsruhe. In 2012, after many joint projects in China and Germany, Hellen became Colani's master student. Back at university, Hellen earned her Diploma in Product Design in 2010 and cooperated with Siemens and BBDO in a postgraduate study in Product Branding at Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach in 2011. Subsequently she received a one semester lectureship at same university and interned at design firm Peter Schmidt Group (BBDO) in brand strategy. For her first freelance project for BMW Hellen moved to Hamburg in 2006. Since then she has worked on projects for clients including Lufthansa Sky Chefs, Volkswagen, Philips, and Moncler and rebranding efforts for Festo. Besides her client work where Hellen primarily on product branding and design thinking she founded her own label standing for blending handcraft and digital technology. Her signature style can be described as bold, emotional and at the same time reduced with the occasional experimental flourish and has been awarded and featured in various books, magazines and exhibitions. Since december 2016 she teaches as Associate Professor at University Saarbrücken in the field of contemporary bionic design. Her students research with 3d-printed lime corals. Her project is supported by Villeroy&Boch and Festo and shown at MoMa and School of Visual Arts New York City in June 2017.
